TOURNAMENT ACCESS

The team at PGA Golf de Catalunya has expertise in all facets of organising international tournaments, not least negotiating with promoters in terms of their fees and the resultant benefits. The club was the first venue in Europe to host two European Tour events within its first nine months following opening. In 2000, the venue set a new attendance record at a Spanish golf event, other than the Ryder Cup when it hosted the Spanish Open at a total cost to the venue of €250K. In 1999, the venue was a joint promoter of the €350K Sarazen World Open with the European Tour and was responsible for running the event, from raising the prize money to organising courtesy cars. This year will be the fourth time for the venue to have hosted the European Tour Qualifying School Stage II. Unlike Kungsangen Golf Club and other northern European clubs, Spanish clubs find it very difficult to get volunteers in the strict sense of the word. On average, venues in Spain pay €50 per volunteer per day to work at tournaments. For any club or resort interested hosting an international tournament, Agustin Garcia, General Manager of PGA Golf de Catalunya, recommends entering a joint venture with a professional promoter. The promoter is responsible for organising logistics and event operations, while their club partner hosts the event. A general rule of thumb in relation to the costs of hosting a tournament run to twice the prize money. Like PGA ETC, PGA Golf de Catalunya enjoys a successful relationship with the European Tour. The main advantage of having such impressive credentials is the ability to get good dates for your tournament from the Tour and the national federations. This is a huge factor in drawing in no only sponsorship, but spectators, a media audience and volunteers. |
