MAIT SCHMIDT: Managing Director, Estonian Golf & Country Club, Estonia
Estonian Golf & Country Club began as a dream of Mait Schmidt’s, who had a vision of a golf club on a par with the world’s top venues. After three years of planning, design and construction, the dream became a reality and the venue was officially launched on 1st August 2006. The club was invited to become a Member Venue of PGA European Tour Courses in 2005.
Mait Schmidt is a qualified civil engineer who spent many years in the construction industry in Estonia. He is a founding partner of one of the country’s largest construction companies, AS Eesti Ehitus, which has since been listed on the Estonian Stock Exchange.
Golf was first introduced to Mait in 1993. He went on to become a member of the Estonian national team from 1997 to 2005. Mait has been a captain of the Tallinn Golf Club Niitvälja for the past seven years. He is a member of the Board of the Estonian Golf Association, the last six of which he has spent as General Secretary. Today, the hobby has become a profession.
Golf is a very new sport in Estonia, although its popularity is fast spreading. To date, the total number of golf club members in Estonia is around 1500. The first Estonian professional golf tour was held at Estonian Golf & Country Club on August 21st – 24th, 2006, with the co-operation of the Finnish Golf Tour.
